Underweight Calculator

This calculator is intended as a simple example of the kind of calculations performed using PROFILES spreadsheets. This calculator was chosen because it is recent, simple (requires relatively few inputs) and addresses problems that are common. The PROFILES spreadsheet models are typically more complex, involving projections of the functional consequences of malnutrition each year over a longer period (usually 5-10 years) and involving a comparison of "do nothing" and "improved" scenarios.

Pelletier and Frongillo (2003) used longitudinal data between 1966 and 1996 from 59 countries to quantify the effect of improvements in child nutritional status (as measured by weight-for-age) on child survival. The model used here is based on a method proposed in Appendix 3 of Pelletier and Frongillo (2003). Reference: Pelletier DL. - Frongillo EA. Changes in child survival are strongly associated with changes in malnutrition in developing countries. Journal of Nutrition 133: 107-119, 2003. Click for more information.

Instructions
Boxes with  yellow borders  are to be filled in by the user. Click on the box and enter data that is representative for the country of your choice. Then click the Get Results button to see the results. in the boxes with red borders.

Inputs Estimate
1. Current under-five mortality rate (deaths per thousand live births)
2. Current prevalence of underweight (weight-for-age Z-score less than -2) among children less than five years of age (%)
3. Predicted or target prevalence of underweight by the end of the intervention period (%)
4. Current population less than 5 years of age in the target area
5. Duration of intervention period in years

The results for the country of choice are the following:
1. Predicted under five mortality rate per thousand births at the predicted or target level of malnutrition. per thousand births
2. Lives saved per year due to expected reduction in underweight. lives saved
