This calculator is intended as a simple example of the kind of calculations
performed using PROFILES spreadsheets. This calculator was chosen because it
is recent, simple (requires relatively few inputs) and addresses problems that
are common. The PROFILES spreadsheet models are typically more complex,
involving projections of the functional consequences of malnutrition each
year over a longer period (usually 5-10 years) and involving a comparison of
"do nothing" and "improved" scenarios.
Pelletier and Frongillo (2003) used longitudinal data between 1966 and 1996
from 59 countries to quantify the effect of improvements in child nutritional
status (as measured by weight-for-age) on child survival. The model used here
is based on a method proposed in Appendix 3 of Pelletier and Frongillo (2003).
Reference: Pelletier DL. - Frongillo EA. Changes in child survival are
strongly associated with changes in malnutrition in developing countries.
