Thanks to support from FANTA / USAID it has been possible to develop a new model to quantify the functional consequences of Low Birth Weight (LBW) in low-income countries. The model, based on a paper by Alderman H. and Behrman
JR. (Estimated Economic Benefits of Reducing LBW in Low-Income Countries,
World Bank, 2003), focuses on seven different outcomes of LBW with
economic consequences. These outcomes are:
- infant mortality
- neonatal care
- infant and child illness
- stunting
- ability (IQ and educability)
- chronic (adult) diseases
- intergenerational birthweight effects
