How is PROFILES customized to a specific country setting?

The adaptation of PROFILES to a specific country generally requires a two-week technical assistance visit to work with a local team in a workshop setting. The country-specific data are collected in-country as well as derived from targeted literature reviews and scans of databases. Data are then entered into the PROFILES model for the country and simulations of functional consequences of malnutrition are undertaken.

Although the process is different in each country application, a typical application involves the following steps:

  1. Define the purpose of the application by identifying policy gaps and appropriate interventions.
  2. Gather country-specific demographic, economic and nutritional data.
  3. Choose the models to be used based on policy gaps, proposed interventions and available data.
  4. Calculate the functional consequences of malnutrition under current and improved conditions using the PROFILES software.
  5. Agree on models, data, and rationale to feature as a result of calculations and sensitivity analysis.
  6. Prepare a coherent and persuasive computer-based scripted presentation.
  7. Devise a policy reform strategy and action plan based on the PROFILES process and help build a coalition of nutrition advocates.
